How GST is calculated in India
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services. To add GST, multiply the taxable value by the rate. To extract GST from an inclusive amount, divide by (1 + rate). Intra-state supplies split the tax equally into CGST and SGST; inter-state supplies charge a single IGST.
Indian SaaS context: Standard slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Most SaaS and professional services fall under 18%. Registered businesses can usually claim the GST they pay on inputs as input tax credit, so the effective cost is the net of output minus input GST.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between GST-inclusive and exclusive amounts?+
An exclusive amount is the base price before GST — GST is added on top. An inclusive amount already contains GST, so the calculator works backwards to extract the taxable value. Enter ₹1,00,000 exclusive at 18% and you pay ₹1,18,000; enter ₹1,18,000 inclusive and the taxable value is ₹1,00,000.
When is it CGST + SGST versus IGST?+
For an intra-state supply (buyer and seller in the same state) GST splits equally into CGST and SGST. For an inter-state supply (different states, or imports) the whole amount is IGST. The total tax is identical either way — only the split changes.
Which GST rate applies to my product or service?+
Most services are 18%. Essentials are 5% or 0%, standard goods 12% or 18%, and luxury/sin goods 28%. The exact rate depends on the HSN/SAC code — when in doubt, check the official rate finder or ask Bryck Tax.
